Much as we might try to deny it, the essence of existence is change. Photography from the beginning has often been called a means of stopping time, a way of preserving a fleeting glimpse of existence in material form. Whether the photographic representation of a temporal moment is a rendering of reality is another question - one that's become a topic of considerable controversy now that it's possible to alter a photo to present an "unreal reality". But for the purposes of this exhibition we're going to accept the assumption that a photographic image depicts or represents a specific instant

The Darkroom Gallery Difference

For Metamorphosis we invite submission of photographs that address the transient, the ephemeral, and the transition from one stage of being to another.  Sometimes it's possible to illustrate two states of existence in the same image, as with Wendi Schneider's photo Unearthed, shown here. In most cases, however, change or transition can be represented by a single image: think of photos of a Bar Mitzvah, the birth of a child, the demolition of an iconic building, the erosion of a hillside and its converse, the volcanic eruption. or the poignant little life and death dramas that take place in our yards and gardens every day. It's also quite possible to suggest change and transition less literally, through the abstract or surreal image, and we encourage entrants to explore those possibilities as well.

Wendi is a highly successful and acclaimed photographer, born in Memphis, whose work is inspired by the lush, plush beauty of the southern landscape and a deep reverence for the natural world. After drawing and painting her way through school, she studied art history at Stephens College in Columbia, MO, then transferred to Newcomb/Tulane in New Orleans, where she majored in painting. She turned to photography in the early ‘80s to create reference images of women for her paintings. Enamored with photography, but missing the sensuality of oils, her early work primarily consisted of hand-painted photographs, with delicate layers of transparent oil paint. After designing and photographing the re-creation the 1901 Picayune’s Creole Cook Book, she moved to NY in 1988 to pursue a career in photography. A major contributor to Hearst’s Victoria Magazine, her color and hand-painted photos were also featured by Bantam, Berkley, Little Brown, Penguin Putnam, Random House, St. Martin's, Simon & Schuster, Warner Books, Sony Records, Young & Rubicam among others. She moved to Denver in 1994, continuing editorial and advertising assignments, along with design and art direction. She recently returned to her fine art photography roots. Her photographs have been honored with awards too numerous to list, and she's had solo exhibitions in several highly regarded museums and galleries, including the Griffin Museum of Photography in Massachusetts and A Gallery For Fine Photography in New Orleans. Her work has been featured in Blur, Diffusion, Silvershotz, Lenscratch, Don’t Take Pictures, Adore Chroma, Rfotofolio, Dodho, among others, and she's received awards and honors from prestigious photographic institutions on both sides of the Atlantic. She recently juried an exhibition titled Serenity for L.A. Photo Curator: Global Photography Awards. Wendi is represented by A Gallery For Fine Photography.
