Be sure to send a file that's large enough to print your image in the size you've chosen. Usually this will be the size of the file your camera has recorded. The number of pixels in height and width in the file is more important than the pixels per inch, but we suggest a ppi of 300 for best print quality but a minimum or 150 ppi is acceptable. If the file you send isn't large enough to make a good print in the size you've chosen we'll have no choice but to print it smaller and add a border to compensate.
If you didn't pay for your prints during the check in process, we'll be sending you a PayPal invoice for the printing cost the week before the opening of the exhibition ($25 for one image, $15 for each additional print). You'll need to send payment for the invoice before we can make your print, so be sure to watch for the invoice and pay it promptly.
After the exhibit we store all prints in a portfolio that remains available for viewing at the gallery. We will return the print to you upon request. Domestic shipping is covered.

View and Be Viewed
Have you ever submitted entries to an exhibit and, after the results are announced, wondered what the rest of the field was like? Which entries were not selected vs those that were?
Darkroom Gallery exhibits have a feature that makes this possible, for those that are willing to share their entries with other submitters, you will be able to see all entries from others in that exhibit who are also willing to share. The idea is to help submitters gain inspiration, motivation, and to reflect on your Juror's perspective. The review period is limited to the date the results are announced through the date the exhibit opens. Once the results are announced, there is no changing your mind about participating. This is critical for maintain fairness so don't even ask.

How to Resize your Images
You can use Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements
- If you don't have Photoshop, download a free trial version on Adobe.com.
- Open your images in Photoshop.
- Resize your images to be equal to or less than 1,280 pixels by 1,280 pixels.
- Resizing is found under the "Image" menu, then click "Image Size".
- Save your file by selecting the "File" menu then "Save for Web & Devices"
- On "Save for Web" Window Select"JPG Maximum Compression Quality".
- Click "Save" and write a simple file name with no spaces or special characters (e.g. vpsg1.jpg, etc.)
You can use the Online Image Converter.
- Click the link above to go to the online converter.
- On that page, click "Browse" to upload your file to convert.
- Be sure the "Output Format" is set to JPG.
- Click "Process and Send Result"
- Enter Your E-mail Address and click Start.
- Repeat with all files requiring JPG conversion.
- After a few minutes, you will get an e-mail with your converted files for download.
How to Make a Submission
Our submission process is fully automated. We allow email entries but there is an additional $5 fee for email entries.
For On-Line Submission:
- First, prepare your files for upload. Make sure they are jpg files, no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, set to the highest quality, and file size < 2 megabytes. Click here for help with resizing. You can name them whatever you like but don't include spaces, special characters or your name in the file name. You will not be able to upload the same file name twice.
- Next register with DarkroomGallery.com. There is a register link under the login form to the left or click here. We ask detailed contact information so we can be sure that we can contact you in order to return prints sent proceeds from sales etc. Follow the account creation instructions. Spell your name and location as you would like it to appear on your gallery label if you are selected.
- Registration is a two step process requiring you to respond to an email you will receive. We depend heavily on correct email addresses so this step is critical to confirm your email address is valid. We don't share your information with anyone.
- Once you create your account, login. A new menu will appear where the login fields were. Click on Make/Change a Submission and follow the instructions on that form. Fee payment can be made at the end of the submission process through our secure gateway or through alternative payment methods. Entry fees can vary from exhibit to exhibit, but our standard rate is the first 5 images for $29 and each additional image is $5.
For Email Submissions
- Download the entry form - you can fill it in and save it or copy the text to an email message.
- Prepare your files for emailing. Make sure they are jpg files, no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, set to the highest quality, and file size < 2 megabytes. Click here for help with resizing. You can name them whatever you like but all files names should be unique. Please don't include spaces, special characters or your name in the file name.
- Create an email message and attach the saved form or enter all the information requested on it into the body of the email.
- Attach your prepared images to the same email.
- You can pay through any of the alternative payment methods. Be sure to allow enough time for payment to arrive by the submission close date and time for your exhibit. Entry fees can vary from exhibit to exhibit, but our standard rate for email submissions is the first 5 images for $34 and each additional image is $6.
When submissions close for an exhibit all entries are submitted to that exhibit's juror anonymously so the juror will not know the name of the photographer. So please don't put your name in the file name.
Please do not attempt to contact the jurors. Doing so will disqualify your entry with no refund. Approximately 55 entries are chosen for display in the Darkroom Gallery. It is our goal to announce the selected entries within seven days of the submission close date. This will be by email and on DarkroomGallery.com.
Rules for Photo Submission
- Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If you are younger. you must have a parent or legal guardian make the submission for you.
- All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry. If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear and who you are actually submitting for.
- Images may not have been exhibited at the Darkroom Gallery within the last year.
- All submissions must be made by digital files through:
- upload on DarkroomGallery.com or
- Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg - set to the highest quality. The color space should be set to sRGB. DPI is only relevant for output purposes and does not effect the stored size of the image. It can be set to any number, but if you must specify something go with 72 dpi. - Up to five images may be submitted for a non-refundable fee of $29 US for on-line submission and $35 for email submission.
- Additional images may be submitted for an additional $6 US per image.
- Images must be received by midnight EST on the submission closing date for the exhibition you are submitting for
- Payment must be received by the close of submissions for the exhibit you are submitting for.
Photographers retain all rights to their work. Submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Darkroom Gallery the right to use their images to promote the exhibition and for display on Darkroom Gallery website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.
For submissions that are selected, photographers may offer their work for sale and establish their own price for framed and unframed prints.
- For Darkroom Gallery framed work we retain 66% of the sale price.
- For works framed by the artist Darkroom Gallery retains 34%.
- For unframed prints Darkroom Gallery retains 25% of the print sale price.
- Local sales tax of 6% is collected on all sales at the gallery.
