Conflict and resolution, photography that documents the dynamic power-struggles in our world and conversely, the moments of calm.
Humankind is in a constant state of conflict. As described by the famous Karl Marx theory: society is in a state of perpetual conflict due to competition for limited resources. One can see that is true if you simply watch a broadcast news program.
From civil rights, to gay rights to global terrorism, our world is a bubbling cauldron of adversarial commotion. And it seems it has always been this way. History textbook pages merely skim the surface when if comes to wars and hypocrisy. Cultural misunderstandings, power-struggles and discrimination easily erupt into violence.

We ask you to think outside the box. This theme of conflict can be expressed intimately, quietly behind civilian curtains as well as on the battlefield.
Juror's Statement: Although there are distinct kinds, war is commonly defined as a state of armed conflict between different nations or states or different groups within a nation or state. Most of us would agree that war is not a necessity. It is not even an indispensable option. It is often the choice of a certain category of leaders who recur to it for personal/political/nationalist reasons and to assert their leadership through a demonstration of power by fomenting conflict. In the process those who suffer most are men and nature. The victims of war are not only the dead but also the survivors who carry the trauma and scars for the rest of their life. As an accurate visual memory photography has the power to disturb when presented in the context of armed conflict, even if it does not depict death and devastation. While reviewing the submissions for this competition I realized that most photographers addressed and expressed mainly the human facet of the aftermath of war, its physical and emotional devastating effects. Therefore my selection was an attempt to assemble a group of works that would also yield an exhibition with an internal logic. Let us pray and hope that at least the future generations will not have to go through the horrors of war. Without wars peace will become a simple fact of life. Dr. Nissan N. Perez |

Figural works, depicted and exposed by fine art photography.
Portraying the human form has been among the greatest challenges, preoccupations, and supreme achievements of artists throughout the ages. The earliest known representations of the human body come from Europe and date to between 25,000 and 12,000 years ago. These carvings were made of stone and ivory, ‘Venus’ figures representing the female form and may have been associated with fertility. Humans feature in other prehistoric art including the cave paintings of early Europe and in the rock paintings of southern Africa. Although there is no way of telling for certain, the production and meaning of art amongst these cultures was probably spiritual, the figures perhaps representing deities or ritually important people.

Darkroom Gallery is calling for figural nudes that push the confines of the photographic medium. Images that are expressive, evocotive and revealing. A timeless subject matter redefined and propelled into contemporary resonance.
Juror's Statement: I looked for work that embraced simplicity in depicting beauty, daring in depicting fresh perspectives on tired cultural cliches, and flashes of eroticism in composing stark and compelling compositions of the living, breathing still life. Daniel Power |

Planar lines that wind, wend and soar through a image's field of focus.
Curving components within a photograph give the image depth, allowing the viewer’s eye to move through the frame almost effortlessly. It is almost as if the photographer takes the viewer by the hand, draws them into the frame, and points the way. The viewer’s eyes are compelled to follow the line of the curvature.

Darkroom Gallery is calling for images that possess this curvy compositional trait.
"In life,
as in art,
the beautiful moves in curves."
-Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton
Juror's Statement: I found the process of jurying very rewarding and was pleased to see so many great photos that explored the theme of curvilinear. There was so much dynamic work submitted and I found numerous images that were well composed, well executed and which addressed the theme in a provocative way. I had a hard time narrowing it down, but in the end, I chose images which presented the world to me in a new way or that made me feel something. For me a good photograph should be exciting, risky, sublime or a bit personal and should ultimately ask more questions than it answers. Sarah Hadley |

Juror: Sarah HadleyPhotographer and Filter Photo Festival Executive Director, Sarah Hadley, is known for all the excellent work she is doing in Chicago, but she happens to live in Los Angeles. Born and raised in a prestigious Boston museum (see below–well, she wasn’t born in the museum..), she developed an early artistic sensibility. While in college, Sarah strayed to Venice, Italy where she fell in love with all things Venice and began her photography career. She returned to the states and finished a degree in Art History and went on to work at the National Gallery and the Library of Congress. After being inspired by Robert Frank’s retrospective, Sarah received a degree in photography at the Corcoran College of Art and went on to work for newspapers and magazines. She eventually moved to Chicago, went to Ragdale, the artists and writers colony in Lake Forest, IL, and discovered the prairie. She was later asked to photograph the amazing Howard Van Doren Shaw house for “The Ragdale House Speaks”. Sarah now lives in Los Angeles, where she regularly returns to Chicago for Filter business and to Venice to make work. Her passion, besides photography, is travel. In 2011, Sarah traveled for the second time to China as a curator for the Lishui Photo Festival and will continue to travel much of 2015. |

Nighttime photography; delve into the darkest hours to uncover secrets and mysteries.
Photographers have long embraced the literary and artistic tradition of the night as theme and subject in their work. The romantic notions and sense of mystery associated with the night, and the transformation from the mundane world to the unknown provide ample material for photographers to explore through their work.

Juror, Lance Keimig states, " The night holds secrets- secrets that may engage our curiosity, shelter us, or frighten us. There are those who seek comfort in the night and those who recoil from it. Brave was the anchestor who stepped outside of the fire circle for he might never return. The interplay of light, shadow, and extremes of contrast heighten this uncertainty - and when the element of time is added in the form of long exposures, the Night Photograph is indeed a worthy vehicle to express these themes."
Darkroom Gallery is calling for nighttime imagery that conveys mystery, surrealism, isolation, loneliness, and time/timelessness.
Juror's Statement: It was a pleasure, but a real challenge to jury the Nocturne competition. Narrowing 630 images down to 55 was not easy, and trying to select a cohesive show based on the theme was even more of a challenge. I was looking for suggestive, rather than literal imagery that conveyed the themes of mystery, solitude, and surrealism. There were many more excellent images than the gallery could accommodate, and many excellent images that either did not fit the theme, or work with the show as it came together. For example, there was a great series of images with an owl and the moon, but they just didn’t work with the theme of Nocturne. Please know that if your work was not selected, that doesn’t mean that I didn’t think it was good, or that I didn’t like it. When entering a juried show, it is important to remember that the selections are just the opinion of a few people, or in this case, one person. I included work that I felt spoke to the theme. A good number of photographers submitted a series of related images, and I tried to find a balance between including multiple related images, and as many different photographers as I could. Newer digital cameras that are capable of shooting at high ISOs have led to a proliferation of Milky Way and astro-landscape photography images, and I found many of those to be lacking in some way. A simple landscape with the Milky Way rising through the frame was not enough to make the cut. A few Milky Way images stood out, such as Lisa Ryan’s Milky Way at Eagle Lake. Scott Martin’s Atacama Hand image stood out immediately from all of the rest- it is technically strong, gorgeous, and exemplifies the themes of mystery, solitude, and surrealism.
