Photographs that rebel against rational thought, a surreal "superior reality" of the subconscious.
In Europe in the 1920's, the artistic movement called Surrealism focused a revolution against the constraints of the rational mind. Psychoanalysts of the time used a variety of techniques to bring to the surface the subconscious thoughts of their patients. The Surrealists borrowed many of the same techniques to stimulate their writing and art, with the belief that the creativity that came from deep within a person’s subconscious could be more powerful and authentic than any product of conscious thought. These artists were also intent on interpreting dreams as conduits for unspoken feelings and desires. These works created didn't begin with preconceived notions of a finished product; rather, they were provoked by dreams, or emerged from subconscious associations between images, text, and their meanings.

It is commonly believed that the primary function of dreams is to psychologically balance and compensate for matters left unsettled during our waking hours. In the dream world, the censors of our mind dissipate and the material in our heads becomesfluid and nonlinear—our past memories, fears and desires all surface symbolically, revealing to us a deeper understanding of ourselves. Metaphorically, this is how I have come to understand my photographic work. Juror's Statement: My interest in dreams lies in their ability to expose our innermost psychology, desires, and fears in a primarily symbolic, visual, and emotional manner. Our deepest memories and the matter of our everyday lives can take the same precedence in the mysterious space of a dream. Dreams are universally personal, experienced only by the dreamer, sometimes so vividly that they are confused with the “reality” of our waking lives. Hallucinations are related, an expression of the interior workings of the mind, an altering of perception, or of an external “reality”. As the title of this exhibition suggests, Dreams and Hallucinations is a conscious attempt by each artist to intersect the sometimes murky life of the mind with the medium of photography. Though the selected photographs are as personal and varied as the individuals who made them, I believe there are universally understood threads that run through them, and, like dreams, are left to be discovered and interpreted by each receptive viewer. - Russell Joslin, November 4, 2014 |

Russell Joslin has been the Editor & Publisher of SHOTS Magazine the past fourteen years. SHOTS is an independent, reader-supported quarterly journal of fine art photography that reaches an international audience. Joslin is also the author of Black Forest: Four Visible Poems, due this November from Candela Books. Black Forest demonstrates his distinct editing style, with a special emphasis on sequence and narrative tone. |

The self-portrait has been a popular form of expression ever since we first saw our own reflection. Like Narcissus, it's often the case that we need not look beyond the tip of our own nose for a muse worth capturing.
Since the fifteenth century and the advent of the mirror artists have modeled for themselves in their own works of art. Whether it is an in-depth exploration of the artist’s own psyche or simply because as a model, the artist is clearly the cheapest and most available. Whatever the reason, nearly every artist in every medium has attempted this exploration of self.

Juror's Statement: Self portraits can be fraught. They can expose something other than what the artist intended. The most successful portraits submitted to Mirror, Mirror I suspect, did just that. They dealt with pregnancy, death, rebirth, violence, fear, heartbreak, loneliness, the supernatural, sexual identity, falling in and out of love, loss of virginity, and ironically, the loss of self. The camera allows a kind of scrutiny that can show one how they feel, whether it be conscious or not The less effective pictures submitted, tackled some fascinating ideas like wrestling with ones self, being ones own grandfather, and hiding from ones self, but the ideas were stronger than the images. The weakest pictures were over-produced, over-photo shopped, mixed media, shadows and reflections, snapshots, and jokes that weren’t funny. In almost all cases I found that the titles of the photographs were too literal. They tried to explain what the artist was suffering which had the deleterious effect of making me, the viewer, feel that the mystery was gone. Good titles are always challenging to find, but without them we aren’t free to have our own interpretations which can be myriad. Amy Arbus |

Throughout the ages, as the natural world's color for water and sky, blue lends itself to spiritual and heavenly leanings. In these modern days, blue is embraced as the color of heaven and authority, denim jeans and corporate logos. Most blues convey a sense of trust, loyalty, cleanliness, and understanding. On the other hand, blue evolved as symbol of depression in American culture. “Singing the blues” and feeling blue” are good examples of the complexity of color symbolism and how the color has been evolved in different cultures.
Juror's Statement: It was interesting and fun to jury a show with such a specific theme. Still I found that I had to narrow down the criteria I used in selecting images. The color blue had to be in there, and while it didn’t necessarily have to predominate, in most cases it did have to stand out and in some way “make” the image. I eliminated many images that had been heavily and obviously filtered or photoshopped, those where the blue was an obvious gimmick, and those that, even mostly blue, could easily have been mostly red, or yellow or some other color. And of course, the image itself had to be strong, so in some cases I chose images that were not necessarily about the blue, but that were powerful, and in which blue was a component. ––Joanna Hurley, July, 2014 |

Juror: Joanna Hurley Joanna Hurley has had a thirty-year career in book publishing working as an editor, publicist, agent, packager and publisher for dozens of photography books as well as books on many other subjects for companies large and small. She is president of HurleyMedia, LLC, which she started in 1994. Previously she was publicity director of Vintage Books, the trade paperback division of Alfred A. Knopf, marketing director of The University of New Mexico Press, and publicity director of the Body Politic Theatre/Community Arts Foundation in Chicago. During the course of her long career, she has worked on projects for a wide variety of photographers and writers ranging from Nick Brandt, Mark Klett, Richard Misrach, Irving Penn, and Eliot Porter to Tony Hillerman, Richard Russo, Thomas McGuane and Richard Ford. She is a co-founder of Radius Books, and board chair of Center, a not-for-profit organization based in Santa Fe that supports and provides opportunity for gifted, committed photographers. |

Next to the discovery of fire, the invention of the wheel has been the most significant achievement in the development of human culture and civilization.
The horse drawn chariot revolutionized warfare, while the stone wheel of the gristmill made it possible to process enough grain to feed increasing numbers of city dwellers, and the oxcart provided transportation for people and produce. In the modern era, life would be unimaginable without wheels. America is truly a "car culture", and the rest of the world is not far behind.
How do you envision wheels in your own life? Maybe you're a car nut, a lover of anything that looks sleek and goes fast, from a Grand Prix car to a NASCAR racer, to a land speed record vehicle. Or perhaps you're more aware of other types of wheels, such as those on bicycles, baby carriages, or trains. And then there are Ferris wheels and pinwheels, skateboards and rollerblades, conveyor belts and steamboats. The possibilities are nearly limitless.
Wheels is Darkroom Gallery's invitation to you depict your photographic discovery of the wheel. We're looking for photos that feature cars in any and all forms, of course, from the classic car to the newest zero-emission vehicles, but Wheels is not limited to cars; anything that moves or operates on wheels is fair game. Juror's Statement: The standard of entries I thought generally high and those that I’ve selected for the final group particularly good examples of contemporary photography. Encapsulating so many aspects of the art the entries showed the high standards that are being achieved by long time photographic enthusiasts and those that – due to the democratisation of photography in this digital age – have only recently started shooting with a considered attitude. As a photographer known for his work in the highly charged world of Formula One one may imagine that I’d like pictures with similar chaotic feel but, away from the race tracks of the world, I like to shoot and enjoy viewing a certain style of photography that is far simpler in it’s execution and mien. It can be viewed here: http://www.darrenheath.com/off-track. The pictures that I’ve chosen for my final group, two runners-up and my juror’s choice, are perfect examples of this type of work. My winning picture, entitled 'Derby Eyes’, is a wonderful study of a seemingly innocent night’s racing at the local dirt track oval. With a haunting and completely mesmerising look on her face the girlfriend of – I assume – one of the race car drivers seems lost in a world of her own. Behind her a row of beaten-up cars and a perfectly positioned trio of guys, fussing over one of the cars, acts as a perfect background isolating and adding intensity to her stare ever more. The picture’s composition, lack of colour, mood and ambience results in me continually coming back to view the picture over and over. My two runners-up: Sleeping at the museum and No overnight parking. Both these superb images I’d be over the moon to have shot. Looking for all the world like pictures shot by Magnum’s Alec Soth or legendary photographer and inspiration to so many William Egglestone, I think both are brilliant. No overnight parking is very reminiscent of the work I so enjoy shooting. Darren Heath |

Juror: Darren Heath Darren Heath is a multi award winning photographer based in London England, specialising in Formula One and the automotive industry, endeavouring to cover events and commissions in a creative and artistic manner using natural light and colour to their maximum effect. Clients include McLaren, Ferrari, Ford, Jaguar, BMW, Toyota, Philip Morris, British American Tobacco, Vodafone, Bridgestone, FIA, Henri Lloyd, Time, F1Racing, Car Graphic, F1 Sokuho, F1 Scene, Car, Top Gear, The Sunday Times, The Telegraph, The Observer, The Financial Times, The Sun, and Conde Nast Traveller. In 2005 The Royal Photographic Society awarded Darren their prestigious Honorary Fellowship as recognition of his excellence and evidence of distinguished ability in his chosen field.
